Hi John, re your coin weigh. The hand on the reverse means that it was made in Antwerp.Nearly all square brass weights were made in the 16 century and carried a portrait of the king on one side and on the reverse in roman numerals the value of the coin.Most square weights were for gold coins.

Lovely find John.(y) Found one very similar a couple of years back although not as clear as yours. Have also seen references to the hand relating to Antwerp as mentioned by historyman. Have posted an image on the MLO/ID gallery for you to compare it.

Hi,
This coinweight was made in Antwerp about 1540-1575 by KI whose name we have not yet rediscovered. The weight is for one of two gold coins, either a golden reaal of Emperor Charles V (shown with sword and orb) if it weighs about 5.32 grams, or for a one third reaal also known as a Carolus gulden if it weighs about 2.91 grams. These coins were made in the years 1521-1556, and the reason both weights have the same image is that they saved on die maker's wages, as the images on both coins were the same.
Nice find for England, but evidence that the Flemish merchants brought their scales and weights with them when they came to trade in England.
